Grass species, sun, drainage, soil, season, and property use can change the right approach. This checklist helps you gather useful information before requesting an estimate.
1. Identify the area and goal
Approximate the area, take wide and close photos, and explain whether you want maintenance, repair, new turf, or a visual refresh.
2. Observe sun, water, and drainage
Note hours of sunlight, where water collects, how the lawn is watered, and any slopes. NC State recommends matching turf to the site and addressing soil preparation and drainage when establishing a lawn.
3. Avoid a one-size-fits-all calendar
Timing and practices vary by grass type and site condition. Use the NC State calendar for your turf and share recent treatments before requesting fertilization.
4. Prepare access details
Tell us about gates, fences, slopes, parking, pets, irrigation, lighting, and known buried services. These details affect equipment, timing, and scope.
5. Keep mulch away from trunks
NC State advises against piling mulch against trunks and stems. Ask for material, preparation, depth, edging, and cleanup to be defined in the estimate.
